Have you ever experienced a fear, reaction, connection, or feeling that seemed to have no obvious explanation in your present life? Perhaps you have an unexplained fear of water, a strong emotional reaction to a particular place or period in history, or an instant connection with someone you have just met. For some people, these experiences simply remain mysteries. For others, they can become an invitation to explore something deeper.
That is where past life regression comes in.
What Is Past Life Regression?
Past life regression is a technique often used within hypnosis to explore memories, images, emotions, and experiences that a person may interpret as belonging to another lifetime or incarnation. For some, past life regression is a spiritual experience and an opportunity to explore the possibility of reincarnation. For others, it is a fascinating journey into the subconscious mind. Some people view what emerges during regression as actual memories, while others understand the experience as the mind communicating through symbolism, imagination, metaphor, or stories.
I believe there is room for exploration without having to immediately decide which explanation is correct. The experience itself can be meaningful. During a regression session, a person is guided into a relaxed, focused state. The hypnotist may then ask a series of questions designed to encourage the person to explore whatever begins to come to awareness.
Questions might include:
What are you wearing?
Where are you?
What year is it?
What do you see around you?
Are there other people with you?
What is happening?
What do you believe your role is in this life?
What happened to you?
How did that life end?
What lesson did you carry forward from that experience?
Is there something from that life that relates to something you are experiencing today?
The goal isn't necessarily to create a perfectly detailed historical account. Instead, the process can be an exploration of the subconscious and the meaning behind what emerges.
The Bridging Technique
One technique sometimes used in regression work is known as a bridging technique.
The basic idea is to begin with something occurring in a person's present life—such as a fear, recurring emotional pattern, relationship difficulty, or unexplained reaction—and use that present experience as a bridge into the subconscious. For example, someone might have an intense fear of deep water despite never having experienced a traumatic incident involving water in their current life. During regression, they may suddenly find themselves experiencing a scene involving water. Does that mean they literally drowned in another lifetime? That is something each person ultimately has to decide for themselves.
But regardless of how the experience is interpreted, the emotions surrounding it may provide an opportunity for exploration.
What does the fear represent?
Where did it come from?
What does the subconscious seem to be trying to communicate?
And perhaps most importantly, what can be learned from it now?
For people who believe in reincarnation, unresolved experiences from previous lives may be carried forward into the present life. Others may understand the same experiences as symbolic representations created by the subconscious mind. I don't believe we always have to have a definitive answer before we can learn something from the experience.
My Journey into Past Life Regression
My interest in reincarnation actually began when I was a teenager. My aunt gave me a book about reincarnation, and I remember being surprised that she even had it. We came from a Catholic background, and my aunt had actually been a nun. Because of that, receiving a book about reincarnation from her was unexpected and immediately caught my attention.
Years later, the subject came back into my life in a way I could never have anticipated.
After my second son was born, something happened that made me look at the subject of reincarnation very differently. My son was only three years old when he began telling me about another life. He told me that his name had been Jim and that he had been a sheriff. He also told me that he had been shot in the leg. What made this especially interesting to me was that my Uncle Jim had, at one point, been a deputy sheriff—and he had been shot in the leg.
I had been a teenager when my uncle died. There was no conversation in our family about reincarnation or past lives, and no one was sitting down with my three-year-old son telling him these stories. So when he began talking about being Jim, being a sheriff, and being shot in the leg, I couldn't simply dismiss it. I didn't know what it meant. But I couldn't ignore it either. That experience stayed somewhere in the back of my mind.
Discovering the Work of Dr. Brian Weiss
As the years went on, I began coming across material from psychiatrist and regression therapist Dr. Brian Weiss, particularly his book Many Lives, Many Masters.
His work opened another door for me. I began exploring guided meditations and eventually had experiences of my own. What happened during those experiences was emotional, vivid, and, at times, difficult to put into words. I began experiencing what appeared to be several different lifetimes. Whether these were actual memories of other incarnations, subconscious stories, symbolic representations, or something I don't fully understand, I cannot prove. But I can tell you that the emotions were very real. And some of the experiences were profound.
The Life of the Nun
In one experience, I found myself living as a nun.
I don't know what country I was living in but I do remember wearing a brown habit, but it wasn't the type of habit we typically picture when we think of nuns. It looked extremely old—almost like it had been made from burlap. In this regression experience I saw myself getting water from an old well. And somehow, I fell into it. I drowned. No one saw me die.
What struck me afterward was the connection I felt with something in my present life.
I have always had a horrible fear of water, particularly deep water where I cannot see the bottom. Could the experience explain my fear? I don't know. There is no way for me to prove that it does. But the connection was fascinating, and it gave me an entirely different way of looking at a fear I had carried for years.
The Life in Montana
In another experience, I found myself living as a Native American woman.
I knew I was somewhere in what we now call Montana. I was in a wooded environment, and I could see what I perceived to be white men nearby. But what caught my attention even more was a Native man. He was my husband. My heart was racing as I watched him betraying our people. He saw me. He came into the wooded area where I was hiding in fear. I felt him cover my mouth to keep me from screaming and then he slit my throat with his other hand. I remember slowly fading away and feeling very cold. My eyes never leaving the eyes of my betrayer. The experience was incredibly vivid.
Again, I found myself wondering about the connection between that experience and my present life. I have thyroid issues, and I began wondering whether there could be some symbolic connection between the throat and what I experience physically today. I want to be clear about something here: I cannot say that a past-life experience caused my thyroid condition. That would be a medical claim that I cannot substantiate. What I can say is that the experience gave me something to contemplate. It made me curious about the symbolism of the throat, expression, communication, and the things we may feel unable or unsafe to say. Sometimes the value of this work isn't necessarily found in proving that an event happened. Sometimes it is found in what the experience causes us to examine within ourselves.
The Twin Boys
The next experience I had was the one that affected me the most. I don't know where it took place or what year it was. The environment was desolate. I remember what appeared to be a small, one-room cabin. There was a man. He had a beard and very coarse red hair. He was an angry and violent man. There was also a woman. She was very frail and appeared weak. She wore a raggedy dress. Her hair was up in a messy bun. I could tell
they were extremely poor. The time of year appeared to be late Autumn or early Winter.
The scene began unfolding. The woman was pregnant and alone in the cabin and she was in labor. She gave birth to two baby boys - twins. I was one of them. I remembering feeling the cold air on my little body as my mother washed me and wrapped me in rags.
The man returned home from hunting and was furious to find that there were two babies.
"We can't even afford to feed one!" He growled angerly at my mother. My mother had laid us on the table to clean us. There was a basin laying on the floor with cold bloody water.
She had just began cleaning my brother when my father had returned home. And as my father came towards the table, spewing those ugly words, he slapped my brother so hard, he fell from the table, landing in the basin of bloody water on the floor where he died.
I remember watching it happen almost in slow motion. And then something happened that I will never unsee. As my brother fell, he looked directly into my eyes. He landed in the water. And then there was silence. I knew in that moment I recognized my twin brother. He is my oldest son in this lifetime. The connection I felt was overwhelming.
In my present life, my oldest son has experienced the abandonment of his father. In this experience, I felt the same sense of helplessness and the same painful awareness of one child surviving while another did not. There was also something deeply familiar about the relationship between the father, the mother, the children, and the circumstances surrounding us. I had experienced an abusive father in this life as well.
Whether those similarities represent reincarnation, subconscious processing, symbolism, or something else, I cannot say. But the emotional experience was unlike anything I had ever encountered. I sobbed. Not ordinary crying. It was a deep, guttural sobbing that seemed to come from somewhere far beneath conscious thought.
The experience left me emotionally raw for days. I don't know if that lifetime was immediately before this one. I don't know if it was literally a past life at all.
But something inside me had been touched. And something inside me needed to be acknowledged.
Do We Have to Know Whether It's "Real"?
This is where past life regression becomes particularly interesting to me.
I don't believe you necessarily have to prove the historical accuracy of every image or experience in order to explore what it means to you.
Perhaps it is a memory.
Perhaps it is a story created by the subconscious.
Perhaps it is symbolic.
Perhaps it is spiritual.
Perhaps there are aspects of consciousness that we simply don't understand yet.
Human beings have always tried to understand the mysteries of consciousness, memory, identity, and existence. We don't have all the answers. And I think there is something beautiful about being willing to explore those questions without pretending we know more than we do. At the same time, I believe it is important to approach regression with curiosity rather than certainty.
A regression experience should not automatically be treated as historical proof.
It should not be used to create fear or convince someone that every problem in their current life was caused by something that happened in another lifetime. And it should never replace appropriate medical or mental-health care.
Instead, I see it as an exploration.
An opportunity to look inward.
An opportunity to ask questions.
An opportunity to discover what our subconscious may be trying to tell us.
Healing Doesn't Always Require an Explanation
For me, past life regression has become less about proving whether reincarnation is real and more about understanding ourselves.
Maybe what appears during a regression is a literal memory.
Maybe it is the subconscious creating a story that gives form to emotions we haven't been able to express.
Maybe it is a metaphor.
Maybe it is something spiritual.
I don't know. But I do know this: The emotions we experience are real, even when we don't completely understand where they came from. Sometimes we carry fears, beliefs, patterns, grief, or emotional responses that seem to have no obvious origin. Exploring them can give us another perspective. And sometimes simply being able to look at something from a different angle can begin to change our relationship with it.
That is what I found in my own experiences. I didn't necessarily walk away with all the answers. I walked away with more questions. But some of those questions led me toward healing.
The Journey Beyond Time
Perhaps that is the real journey of past life regression. It isn't necessarily about traveling backward in time and finding definitive proof of who you were. Maybe it is about traveling inward. About entering the deeper layers of consciousness and allowing yourself to explore the stories, emotions, images, and experiences that arise.
Whether you believe in reincarnation or not, there is something fascinating about the human mind and its ability to create experiences that can feel incredibly vivid and emotionally powerful. For me, past life regression—whether it is something real, something my subconscious creates, or a combination of things I don't yet understand—has been a tool for helping me explore parts of myself that needed healing.
It has helped me look at fears differently.
It has helped me examine relationships.
It has helped me explore patterns.
And it has helped me make sense of experiences that, at times, seemed to have no explanation.
Maybe we don't always need to know exactly where something came from to begin healing it. Maybe sometimes we simply need to be willing to listen. To become curious.
To ask the deeper question. And to follow the journey wherever it leads.
What if the answers you've been searching for aren't somewhere outside of you—but somewhere within you, waiting to be remembered?
Ready to Take Your Own Journey Beyond Time?
After sharing my own experiences with past life regression, you may be wondering what it would be like to explore this for yourself. If you are curious about past lives, reincarnation, unexplained fears or patterns, or simply want to explore the deeper layers of your own subconscious mind, I have created two different Journey Beyond Past Life Regression digital downloads available in the Mystic Vibes Shop.
Both are designed to take you on a guided inner journey, but they are created in different formats to accommodate different ways people naturally experience relaxation, imagination, and suggestion.
Journey Beyond Past Life Regression Meditation
The Journey Beyond Past Life Regression Meditation is a wonderful choice if you enjoy meditation, visualization, and being guided through an experience while remaining more actively aware of your surroundings. During the meditation, you are guided through relaxation and visualization techniques designed to help quiet the conscious mind and allow your inner awareness to become more receptive.
This may be a good fit for you if you:
Enjoy guided meditations and visualization
Prefer a gentle, relaxed approach
Like to remain consciously aware while exploring your inner world
Are curious about past-life experiences but are new to regression

There is no need to force anything to happen. You simply follow the guidance, relax, and remain curious about whatever comes to mind. You may experience images, emotions, physical sensations, thoughts, impressions, or you may experience something completely different.
There is no "right" way to do it.
Journey Beyond Past Life Regression Hypnosis
The Journey Beyond Past Life Regression Hypnosis digital download takes you into a deeper hypnotic experience. Rather than simply listening to a meditation, the hypnosis is designed to guide you into a focused state of hypnosis, allowing the conscious mind to become more relaxed while the subconscious mind becomes more accessible.
This may be a better fit for you if you:
Respond well to hypnosis and hypnotic suggestion
Want to experience a deeper level of relaxation
Find it easier to explore through hypnosis than traditional meditation
Are interested in going beyond conscious thought and allowing your subconscious to lead the experience
Want a more immersive past-life regression experience
Are comfortable allowing yourself to relax deeply and follow the hypnotic guidance
As with any regression experience, what you experience may be different from person to person.
You might see a scene.
You might feel an emotion.
You might suddenly know something without knowing how you know it.
You might experience a physical sensation, hear a name, notice a particular place or time, or simply have a strong sense that you are somewhere else. And you may experience nothing that resembles what you expected. That's okay too.
The purpose isn't to perform or to get the "right" answer. It is to explore.
Which One Is Right for You?
Think of the meditation as a gentle invitation to explore, while the hypnosis is designed to help you go deeper into the experience. Neither is better than the other. They are simply different approaches.
Choose the meditation if you naturally enjoy guided visualization and prefer to maintain a greater sense of conscious awareness throughout the experience.
Choose the hypnosis if you are comfortable with hypnosis and want a deeper, more immersive experience that encourages you to relax more fully and allow your subconscious mind to participate in the journey.
And remember—you don't have to decide beforehand what your experience means.
You don't have to prove reincarnation. You don't have to determine whether what you experience is a literal past life, a symbolic story, or something your subconscious mind has created. You simply have to be willing to explore.
